Whitney Wasson, a Portage Park resident and cartoonist, is releasing their first collection of comic strips from the popular online webcomic, Sober Rabbit. The cute, bleak, simply drawn comic has garnered an international following and has 50+ patrons on Patreon. Focused on addiction recovery, mental health, disability, and LGBTQ+ relationships, Sober Rabbit has been published on Instagram since 2019.
This slim volume (28 pages, color!) will be available first at Howling Pages, the new indie comic shop in Portage Park. Alain Park and Ashley Towne, store owners, are hosting a free pop-up launch event on Saturday, December 17, 2022 from 5-8 p.m. Please note: Masks are required at this event.
COOL UPDATE: Cristina of Bendicion Dry Bar will be sharing some alcohol-free mixed drinks. (When you're next near Humboldt Park, please be sure and check out the brand-new sober bar/bottle shop and plant store! Whitney and other local artists sell artwork and accessories there, too!)
In addition to the new books, the author will have original artwork, prints, mini-comics and pins available for sale. Please note: Howling Pages is a family-friendly bookstore, but Sober Rabbit artwork on display for this event will have some adult content, such as depictions of drug use and big time despair!

New Sober Rabbit Comic Book Details Portage Park Cartoonist's Brushes with Death, Grief, and Recovery

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Whitney Wasson (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist originally from Fort Smith, Arkansas. A standup comedian who produced a slew of shows, performed at dozens of comedy festivals across the country, and made thirties of dollars, they got hit at a crosswalk by a distracted driver. They then became a sitdown comedian and then a stay-at-home comedian. They're now mostly a cartoonist. Learn more at soberrabbit.com
